Private LTE & 5G8 terms
- Private LTE / Private 5G
- Your own mobile network on your site, using the same technology as a carrier network but only for your devices. Runs on licensed spectrum, so without interference from others.
- Spectrum (licensed)
- The part of the radio frequencies you may use exclusively. In the Netherlands you apply for it for local networks with the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure (RDI).
- Core network
- The 'brain' of a mobile network: decides which devices may connect, where traffic goes and how antennas work together. Can sit locally on your site or centrally in our data centre.
- Radio planning
- Calculating and measuring where antennas need to go to reach the desired coverage and capacity everywhere, taking buildings, racking and machines into account.
- Handover
- The transition of a moving device from one antenna to the next. In LTE and 5G the network handles this, so the connection does not stutter.
- Latency
- The delay between sending and receiving data, in milliseconds. Important for AGVs, remote control and anything that must respond instantly.
- SIM / eSIM
- The 'key' that lets a device onto a mobile network. An eSIM is built in and activated digitally.
- Trial setup
- A working Private LTE or 5G network at your location for three months, with the same hardware as the final network, at a reduced rate.
Temporary internet7 terms
- Uplink
- The connection from the site to the internet: fibre, microwave link, satellite, fixed wireless access or bonded mobile connections.
- Microwave link
- A wireless link between two points with clear line of sight, for example from a nearby mast to the site. High capacity without digging.
- Bonded connections
- Several mobile or fixed connections that work together as one. If one fails, the rest carry on.
- Carrier grade
- Equipment of the level carriers use themselves: built to run for years without interruption, with dual power supplies and parts.
- Redundant
- Built twice. If a part or connection fails, the second takes over without users noticing.
- Backup power
- Batteries or a generator that keep the network equipment running when site power fails.
- Separate networks (VLAN)
- Several logical networks over the same equipment, for example payments, production and visitors, that cannot see or disturb each other.
Business internet6 terms
- FTTH
- Fibre to the Home: fibre over the consumer network. Often fine for small offices, without a business SLA.
- FTTO
- Fibre to the Office: a business fibre connection with guaranteed capacity, symmetrical speed and an SLA.
- SLA
- Service Level Agreement: the agreements on availability, response time and repair time in case of a fault. With us tailored per client to what your business needs.
- Symmetrical
- Upload and download equally fast. Important for cloud storage, video calls and backups.
- Fixed IP address
- An internet address that does not change, needed for VPN, remote cameras and your own servers.
- Backup connection
- A second connection via a different route, for example wireless, that takes over automatically when the main connection fails.
Fixed wireless access3 terms
- Fixed wireless access (FWA)
- Business internet via an antenna on your building instead of a cable in the ground. Often live within days.
- Line of sight
- Clear view between two antennas. The better the line of sight, the higher and more stable the capacity.
- On-site measurement
- A test at your location beforehand to determine what capacity is really achievable, instead of a maximum from a brochure.
Enterprise networking & wireless6 terms
- Site survey
- A measurement in your building or on your site to determine where access points should go and how many are needed. Prevents too many, too few or badly placed devices.
- Access point
- The device on the ceiling or wall that transmits the Wi-Fi signal. A business network has several that work together.
- Roaming
- A device switching from one access point to the next while you walk or drive. Good design prevents stutters at that switch.
- Coverage plan
- A floor plan per level or site showing where the signal is strong enough. Part of our design and of the test report.
- Guest network
- A separate Wi-Fi network for visitors, fully separated from your business data, with its own login page.
- Test report
- The document at handover that records coverage and capacity and where each device is installed.
Cabling4 terms
- Cat6 / Cat6a
- Categories of copper cabling. Cat6a supports higher speeds over the full length and is the safer choice for new installations.
- Patch cabinet
- The cabinet where all network cables come together and connect to switches.
- Certification
- Testing every installed cable with a measuring instrument, with a report per outlet as proof that the cable meets the standard.
- Labelling
- Every outlet and cable gets a unique number that appears in the documentation, so the next engineer knows immediately what runs where.
Colocation4 terms
- Colocation
- Placing your own servers in a data centre that provides power, cooling, security and connectivity.
- Rack / unit (U)
- A rack is a server cabinet; a unit is the standard size of one slot in it (4.45 cm). You rent from one unit up to a full rack.
- Cross-connect
- A direct cable connection inside the data centre between your equipment and a carrier, cloud or other party.
- Remote hands
- An engineer from the data centre or from us who performs physical actions on your equipment on request, such as a restart or replacing a drive.
Roaming data SIM cards4 terms
- Roaming data SIM
- A SIM card not tied to one carrier that picks the strongest network per location, also abroad.
- Data bundle
- The amount of data per month that comes with the SIM, matched to the device: small for a sensor, large for a router.
- Management portal
- The online environment where you activate and block SIM cards and see usage.
- IoT
- Internet of Things: devices such as sensors, meters and machines that send data on their own.
